Reacting to the media reports on elevated radioactivity levels in the vicinity of the Taishan Nuclear Power Plant in the south of China, Serbian Radiation and Nuclear Safety and Security Directorate (SRBATOM) wants to confirm that, to date, we have not received any official information on this matter. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) released no official information on the matter as well.

The National Commission for Nuclear Activities Control (CNCAN) as the nuclear safety and security regulatory authority of Romania informed the International Atomic Energy Agency on a minor incident on 15 June 2021 in the Cernavodă Nuclear Power Plant site in Romania. The incident occurred in the chlorination station located outside the nuclear facility. The incident had no impact on people’s health or the environment, and had not interfered with the safety in the power plant operations.

As a part of GENESIS project (Boosting excellence of UNSPMF NPG in neutrino physics research), approved by the Science Fund of the Republic of Serbia within the Serbian Science and Diaspora Collaboration Program, the associates of the Chair of Nuclear Physics in the Department of Physics at the Faculty of Sciences in Novi Sad, led by Prof. Dr Natasa Todorovic as the project manager, have officially become the members of DUNE (Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment) science collaboration. DUNE is currently made up of over 1000 researchers from more than 30 countries (more than 190 institutions), and the first research team from Serbia was represented by the associates from the Chair of Nuclear Physics – Prof. Dr Natasa Todorovic, full professor, Prof. Dr Jovana Nikolov, associate professor, and Dr Nikola Jovancevic, assistant professor, as well as four doctoral students of nuclear physics. A member of the team is also Dr Lidija Zivkovic, a scientific consultant at the Institute of Physics in Belgrade.

Belgrade, 26 April 2021 – Serbian Radiation and Nuclear Safety and Security Directorate (SRBATOM) organized online conference “Sustain Nuclear Safety: Chernobyl 35 Years After”, on 35 years since one of the greatest nuclear accidents in the history of humankind.

The participants in the international conference Workshop on Justification of practices in the medical field and non-medical imaging exposures on 21 and 22 April 2021 via Zoom application were the representatives of the European Commission, the International Atomic Energy Agency, the United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation (UNSCEAR), the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP), European professional organizations, and numerous national and European experts.

To mark 35 years since the Chernobyl nuclear accident as one of the gravest accidents in the history of humankind with a significant impact on nuclear energetics and safety worldwide, on 26 April, Serbian Radiation and Nuclear Safety and Security Directorate (SRBATOM) organizes the online conference Sustain Nuclear Safety: Chernobyl – 35 Years After.

The IAEA’s Technical Cooperation Division for Europe organized a virtual event on 30 and 31 March 2021, convening the representatives of 33 Member States, in which, the Republic of Serbia was represented by the director of Serbian Radiation and Nuclear Safety and Security Directorate, Mr Sladjan Velinov as the National Liaison Officer (NLO) with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). The meeting served to present 17 new project designs, and 10 regional projects from the previous cycle continuing until 2023.

Serbian Radiation and Nuclear Safety and Security Directorate is a separate and functionally independent regulatory body conducting regulatory, expert and other related executive duties in the field of radiation and nuclear safety and security. We talked about the protection of the environment, as well as the social responsibility of the Directorate in this area, with the Director of the Directorate, Sladjan Velinov.

Belgrade, 16 March, 2021 – The Director of Serbian Radiation and Nuclear Safety and Security Directorate (SRBATOM), Sladjan Velinov participated in the introductory session of the European Transportation Security Series (ERTSS) for nuclear and other radioactive material, which is jointly organized and hosted by the National Commission for Nuclear Activities Control (CNCAN) and the United States Department of Energy, National Nuclear Security Administration.
