SRBATOM presents Serbian capacities for nuclear and radiological risk assessment

Since the outbreak of Ukrainian crisis, Serbian Radiation and Nuclear Safety and Security Directorate, commensurate with its powers and competences, has increased the level of preparedness and activities in radioactivity monitoring in the air in the Republic of Serbia.

A great deal of misinformation and sensational reports that have been spreading in the mass media since the outbreak of Ukrainian crisis mislead the public and can cause only harm.

Only the Directorate and other competent institutions in this field can have accurate and timely information on the level of radioactivity in Serbia and Europe, as well as the information on any emergency events. If there were any significant changes in the level of radioactivity in the air compared with those that are expected, the citizens would be timely informed.

This is why a short video has been made, presenting the capacities of Serbia in terms of assessing the safety and security of radiological risks, including nuclear power plants accidents, situation monitoring and decision making on the protection measures for the public.

In order to preclude any kind of misinformation spread, Director of the Directorate, Sladjan Velinov underlined that “it is extremely important to emphasize that taking protection measures on one’s own initiative without previous instructions can be counterproductive and even cause great damage.  It is of great importance for the citizens to know that only the Directorate and other competent institutions have the accurate and timely information”, concluded Velinov.
