Nikola Tesla Museum marks 70th anniversary

The Nikola Tesla Museum celebrated today 70 years since its establishment. The numerous invitees attending the celebration were hosted by Ivona Jevtic, Director of the museum, Sladjan Velinov, Director of Serbian Radiation and Nuclear Safety and Security Directorate and Chairperson of the Board of the museum, and Zoran Vapa, Chairperson of the Supervisory Board of the museum.

The museum was established based on the decision of the Government of FPR Yugoslavia on 05 December in 1952, and it was open for the public on 20 October 1955 as the first technical museum in Yugoslavia. On this occasion, the visitors could see the permanent exhibition of faithfully made models based on Tesla’s drawings.

The year of 1957 is considered as the onset of the museology practices of the Nikola Tesla Museum when the urn was brought to the museum and thus completed its permanent exhibition. On 09 October 1969 the city of Belgrade took over the founding rights based on the agreement concluded between the city of Belgrade and the Federation. On 21 May 2020, at the proposal of the Ministry of Culture and Information, the Government of the Republic of Serbia adopted the Decision on taking over the founding rights of the Nikola Tesla Museum (number 022-3929/2020). The City of Belgrade transferred all founding rights, obligations and responsibilities to the Republic of Serbia free of charge, and as a result, the Nikola Tesla Museum received the status of a republic cultural institution.

The Nikola Tesla Museum is today a unique scientific and cultural institution in every sense of the word both in Serbia and worldwide. It is the only museum preserving the original and personal legacy of Nikola Tesla. Its holdings include some extremely valuable collections, such as more than 160,000 original documents, more than 2,000 books and periodicals, more than 1,200 historical and technical exhibits, more than 1,500 photographs and glass photographic plates of original technical items, instruments and devices, and more than 1,000 plans and drawings.
