FIRST JOINT MEETING OF REGULATORY BODIES IN REGION

In commemorating the tenth anniversary of Serbian Radiation and Nuclear Safety and Security Directorate – SRBATOM on 09 December 2019, the representatives of the regulatory bodies in this field in the region of former Yugoslavia also held the first joint meeting.

The meeting was initiated from our Directorate, with the idea to exchange experience on performing regulatory duties in the field of radiation and nuclear safety.

Ms Ivana Avramovic, Assistant Director in the Division of Radiation and Nuclear Safety and Security gave a presentation on the history of regulatory duties in this region by connecting key events in our history with the events in the region and worldwide that initiated them.

Mr Branko Brajic, Assistant Director in the Division of Legal, Financial, Common Affairs and Human Resources and International Cooperation presented legislative framework regulating this area in the Republic of Serbia.

The Director of the Directorate, Mr Slаdjan Velinov, pointed at practical solutions to establishing cooperation with different institutions and bodies involved in the issues of radiation safety and security.

Our guests from Croatia, North Macedonia and Bosnia and Herzegovina were interested in different issues and related solutions present in the practice of Serbia, which were addressed by the representatives of the Directorate. This was an opportunity to exchange valuable experience and verify shared issues and potential cooperation in attending to them.

On the second day, the guests visited the “Vinca Institute of Nuclear Sciences” and “PC Nuclear Facilities of Serbia”. This was an opportunity for the visitors to see and get acquainted with the radioisotope production, work of Radiation unit for industrial sterilization and conservation of food and Ionizing Radiation Metrology Laboratory in the Vinca institute, as well as radioactive waste storages and radioactive waste reprocessing facilities in “PC Nuclear Facilities of Serbia”.

The initiative to have a meeting of regional regulatory authorities was greeted with the approval and support of all countries in the region although the representatives of Montenegro and Slovenia were prevented from attending this time due to previously arranged duties. Nevertheless, everybody expressed clear intention to have this as a regular activity in the region.
