“Zelena Srbija” project realized in Kraljevo

Serbian Radiation and Nuclear Safety and Security Directorate (SRBATOM) in cooperation with the city of Kraljevo and Color Media Communications continued “Zelena Srbija” project of tree planting on 15 December in Kraljevo. On this occasion, the trees of sycamore maple and birch were planted in Beranovac in Kraljevo.

The main aim of “Zelena Srbija” project is to protect the environment and raise the awareness among the citizens, local self-governments and companies on the importance of re-greening and reforestation of our country. So far, the project has been realized in cooperation with numerous embassies in Serbia, and this time the support to tree-planting in Kraljevo came from the Embassy of Georgia to Serbia. The tree planting was attended by the Mayor of Kraljevo, Dr Predrag Terzic, the Chargé d’Affaires of the Diplomatic Office of the Embassy of Georgia in the Republic of Serbia, Ilia Koberidze, and Assistant Director at SRBATOM, Branko Brajic.

The Mayor of Kraljevo, Dr Predrag Terzic stated that, thanks to Serbian Radiation and Nuclear Safety and Security Directorate, the Chargé d’Affaires of the Diplomatic Office of the Embassy of Georgia and the Public Utility Company of Kraljevo, Beranovac had been enriched with new seedlings.

“With the Chargé d’Affaires of the Diplomatic Office of the Embassy of Georgia we talked about our touristic potentials, our monasteries of Zica and Studenica, and the medieval town of Maglic. We plan to have several meetings with the aim of establishing improved economic cooperation between the city of Kraljevo and the Republic of Georgia. The city of Kraljevo is open to all people willing to cooperate and perceiving the opportunities to achieve better economic results, and I hope that in the future we will have more of good and beneficial actions such as the one we had today”, said Terzic.

Ilia Koberidze, the Chargé d’Affaires of the Diplomatic Office of the Embassy of Georgia in the Republic of Serbia, pointed at numerous similarities between Serbia and Georgia, the most important being the orthodox church and family relations, tradition, food and lifestyle in general.

“It is my utter pleasure to be in this beautiful city today and represent the Republic of Georgia in such a significant socially responsible project. I talked with the Mayor of Kraljevo about a possible further cooperation between our two countries in the future. Regarding the environmental protection, 40% of Georgian territory is under forests, 98% of which are natural forests, and the fifth of this natural wealth is under the state protection”, stated Koberdize.

On behalf of Serbian Radiation and Nuclear safety and Security Directorate, Assistant Director, Branko Brajic expressed his gratitude to the mayor and the management of the city of Kraljevo for recognizing the importance of “Zelena Srbija” project which has been carried out by the Directorate for past several years.

“We are all today witnessing the importance of re-greening and preserving our environment. Today, we have planted the seedlings of sycamore maple and birch trees in order to contribute to cleaner and better air in our country. The Directorate will continue to participate in this action and we hope that this planting is seen as a symbolic, small, but also as a significant first step towards establishing a greater cooperation between the city of Kraljevo and the Republic of Serbia on one side, and the Republic of Georgia on the other”, added Brajic.

The project of “Zelena Srbija” has been organised for three years now. Every year, the planting of trees is organized in ten cities and municipalities around Serbia. The city of Kraljevo is the 25th municipality that has joined the project so far.
