Representatives of U.S. Department of State visit Serbian Radiation and Nuclear Safety and Security Directorate

Justin P. Friedman, Senior Advisor for Commercial Competitiveness in Nuclear Energy, Bureau of Arms Control and Non-proliferation and his successor in this position, Christopher Klein have visited today Serbian Radiation and Nuclear Safety and Security Directorate (SRBATOM) and used this occasion to have a meeting with SRBATOM Director, Sladjan Velinov and his associates.

The representatives of the US State Department acknowledged the importance the US Government attaches to the development of peaceful applications of nuclear energy, both domestically, within the United States, and through the support to the countries embarking on or preparing nuclear programmes. In this regard, the United States are ready to strengthen their cooperation in this field with the Republic of Serbia, primarily through conclusion of the Memorandum of Understanding at the governmental level, as well as through various forms of practical assistance, including the organization of workshops and training programs for Serbian personnel.

Director Velinov emphasized that SRBATOM is a signatory to the Arrangement for the Exchange of Technical Information and Cooperation in Nuclear Safety Matters with the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission which serves as a framework for fostering stronger ties through the exchange of expertise and knowledge, primarily aimed at further enhancing the functioning of the Serbian regulatory authority and expanding its capacities.

Both parties acknowledged that there is considerable potential and mutual interest in strengthening cooperation between Serbia and the United States in this field, and that today’s meeting provides a solid foundation for future collaboration.
